Community guidelines

That is a heavier name than this page deserves. It is really just a note about how things work here.

The Sloth Club is a small room off the side of DayBloq, for people keeping a journal on their phone. Ask for a feature. Show what you made. Pass on the trick you worked out. Ask the question you think is too small to ask. And if it is none of those, it still belongs here, as long as it is about keeping a journal.

There is one thing we are after, which is a room people are glad they opened. Most of this page is just that, said in more words. One section is not a matter of taste, and it is written plainly: what is never allowed here.

It is only open to people who use DayBloq: only DayBloq users who sign in with the code from the app can read it. You need to be at least 17 to post, comment or vote here.

Post what belongs here

The people reading are the people making the app, and a few hundred others keeping the same kind of notebook you are. That is a better audience than most things on the internet get.

Write in the language you keep your journal in. We read English and Spanish.

If you are asking for a feature, two small favours, and neither of them is a rule.

Have a look at what is already there. The form shows you similar posts as you type, and a vote on the one that exists says more than a second copy of it does.

Keep it to one idea per post. Not because we are tidy - a post asking for five things cannot be voted on, planned, or marked done, so it tends to sit still while the others move.

And tell us what you were trying to do, not only what to build. I wanted to find last March’s entries leaves us room to solve it better than add search does.

Three things we would rather you didn’t

Sell things. No other apps, no referral links, no take a look at my shop. Not because we are precious about it - a room fills up with advertising faster than it fills up with anything else, and then nobody comes back.

Be unkind. Disagree with an idea all you like; that is most of what this place is for. Aim it at the idea and not at the person who had it. No insults, no pile-ons, nothing you would not say to someone sitting across a table.

Speak for DayBloq when you’re not. Replies from us carry a DayBloq team badge that only we can add. A name claiming otherwise gets changed.

That is the list of things we would rather you didn’t. The next one is different.

Never allowed, anywhere here

These come down as soon as we see them, and the person who posted them stops getting sign-in codes. No warning first.

If you are having thoughts of hurting yourself, please do not carry them alone. Call your local emergency number, or find a free, confidential helpline in your country at findahelpline.com.

Seeing something that should not be here

Every post and comment has a Report link once you are signed in. Pick what is wrong, send it, and we get it by mail straight away. When two different people report the same thing, it comes off the board by itself until we have looked. We look at every report within a day.

Not signed in, or no code? Anyone can report illegal content through the contact form: choose “Report illegal content” and give us the address of the post. It reaches the same people. If someone is in danger right now, contact your local emergency services first.

Keep your own life your own

Only people signed in with the code from the app can read what is here, but that is still a room full of people you have never met. Your email address, your phone number, an order number, a page out of your journal you did not mean to share - please leave those out. If one slips in anyway, open the post: you can edit or delete what you wrote, and your comments too, without asking anyone. If you need to send us something private, the contact form reaches the same people.

If you add a picture, the hidden data inside it, including where it was taken, is stripped out on your phone before it uploads. Still worth a glance at what is in the frame.

You can also take everything back at once: the delete your data page erases your posts, comments, votes and record in one go.

If something is broken, we would rather fix it than discuss it

An app that crashes, a purchase that did not arrive, notes that went missing, a refund - those need an answer about your account, and a shared room cannot give you one. Write through the contact form and a person will reply. A bug report belongs here when what you really mean is this should work differently.

When we step in

Mostly we hide a post, and that is all - a duplicate, something that wandered off, a comment that got sharper than it needed to be. Hiding is not permanent, and we undo it happily.

We delete outright only when something should not be stored at all: somebody’s personal details, spam, anything illegal. And we stop handing out sign-in codes to the rare person who turns up only to make a mess.

Pictures get two extra looks. An automatic check for adult or violent content runs as you post, and a picture that fails it comes off the post while what you wrote stays. Then every picture waits for a person on the DayBloq team before anyone else can see it; until then the post shows without it.

Whenever we hide or remove a post, it tells you why, and which part of these guidelines it went against. For a comment, ask us through the contact form and we will tell you. When we stop someone signing in, the Sloth Club page tells them why.

If we get it wrong, and we will sometimes, say so through the contact form. We reply within 2 days and decide within 7, and we would much rather put something back than argue about it.

What the labels mean

These sit on feature requests only. Open - we have not decided. Planned - we mean to build it, with no date attached. In progress - someone is actually working on it. Done - it shipped. Not planned - we read it and decided against it, and the post stays up so nobody has to ask twice.

Votes tell us what matters most. They are not a promise: a request with a hundred of them can still be turned down for reasons that have nothing to do with how much people want it.

That is everything. Go and write something.
